Wizard of Oz Ideas?

Tonight is the Kick-off for our local American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Our theme this year is "The Wizard of Oz"...

And we're looking for fundraising ideas.

Our team members will need Ruby slippers sneakers, of course. These were on Esty but were sold by the time I found them.

I think we'll try to make our own. One of my favorite blogs, Modge Podge Rocks, did a post this month on using Modge Podge to apply glitter to shoes...sounds messy but maybe worth a try.

The planning committee has already ordered miles of yellow construction tape to mark off the high school track  "Yellow Brick Road" and we're snapping up costume patterns at JoAnne's Fabrics.

Now for the hard part...coming up with really good fundraising ideas. There is so much amazing talent in Blogland...I'm hoping some of you might have some creative new ideas for us. We're lookng for things we can sell fairly inexpensively along the track...

And hoping to find projects that are:
1. Quick & Easy
2. Thrifty (I'll be donating the supplies), and
3. Related to the Wizard of Oz theme or to Hope/Cancer awareness/walking)
The Art teacher at my school makes earrings similar to these. I'm wondering about buying beads wholesale and making some. A purple ribbon is the color of Relay but we could also make pink and teal ones. I just wonder if they are too labor intensive and whether we could make a profit on them?

We were also thinking of making or selling things people need when walking...lanyards, shoelaces, etc. Any ideas?

Our team may also have a Silent Auction or raffle. Any ideas for larger items that might be popular at this kind of event?

I'd love to hear your ideas. Nothing is too wacky for us to try if it will raise money to help people with cancer. (Anyway, by 3:00 a.m. we'll be looking for "wacky" to help us stay awake!)

Can't wait to see what you come up with!
Thanks,

That sounds like quite a challenge and I wish you all the best with it! I'm not good at fund raising ideas so I hope some other bloggers have some for you! Hugs,
Pamela

Just a quick search took me to this

to begin looking for ideas. Personally I like the flying monkeys theme.
I'll see what quick and inexpensive ideas I can come up with.

I like this idea of the diplomas the wizard gave everyone at the end and I found a printout to get you started. http://www.birthdayinabox.com/party-ideas/guidesdetails.asp?aseq=1509&bgs=154&dept_id=0
Also magic wands can be made simply, quick and easily, even bubble wands if you are not afraid of soap residue.

Hi Cheryl, when I managed a bank we sold chocolate lollipops to raise money for one charity....candy/food is usually a good seller as people love to eat! Another time we raised money for March of Dimes and they were selling the little cardboard booties for a dollar. My lead teller was so aggressive...asking all the customers where else they could get "bootie for a buck" and it was a hit!! Other branches sold about $20 booties....my branch alone sold $1,400!!! How about doing something with Dunkin "Munchkins"?

My coworkers and I hosted a fundraiser for a young man with cancer a few years ago. My mother made curling iron cozies that sold like hotcakes @ $10 apiece. They are heat resistant, so your curling (or flat) iron can be packed away while it is still hot! I love, love, love mine and I've had it for over 10 years. Here is a tutorial, but I'm sure there are many more to be found.

Let`s see...on fist thoughts I can come up with:
-Dorothy Aprons for kids (easy to sew and cute for the grandkids- because folks always buy for the grandkids, don`t they? :-))
-Tinman hearts cardstock hearts with some red candy or Chocolate hearts attached to it, maybe with a cute saying like "from my bosom to yours"(Is that proper english?sorry I`m German...)
- Dorothys baskets filled with homemade bread, cake, jelly, whatever you girls can whip up , covered with that red-white checkered cloth thingy
- simple waterbottles with labes (for the walkers)with quotes from the movie
- hairbows like Sorothys for the girls from a cute fabric
- lionmasks for the boys

As for your shoes herè`s another tut:

Whishing you a lot of fun and lots and lots of fundraising goodness!!!
