I had added shades to try to update this 70's eyesore a bit...they helped but I still hated the shiny builder's brass finish and wanted it GONE!
Here's the back story:
I bought a new chandelier for the dining room a few years ago...but DH didn't want to put it up...he really loved this old brass one. I tried everything to convince him...showed him before and after magazine photos, innocently walked him through Pottery Barn a few times, hung it in the garage to show him how gorgeous it would look...even made him suffer through decorating shows on HGTV...but he still held out for the shiny brass one. Deciding that jeopardizing my happy marriage over a chandelier was pretty silly, I dejectedly placed the new one in the attic...where it sat for three years. Until last week. Surprise! I came home from school to find the ugly old chandy DOWN!
Even better, my very dusty new chandelier was hanging in it's rightful place over the dining room table. Maybe this "Bye, Bye 70's" thing I've got going is starting to catch on with him!
Here's the new chandy in place. It's got a rubbed black finish instead of shiny brass...
which looks so much better with my black hutch...
and I love the change!
Who knows? Maybe I can get DH to give away his polyester leisure suit next!

Good for you. I agree, the new one looks great. I like the color of your walls too. The dining room looks very nice.
I love your new chandelier! You have an awesome hubby to surprise you like that. I think it looks beautiful with the black hutch and does look more in keeping with the age of your house. Pamela
Love your post, it gave me a chuckle! The new chandelier looks just perfect, so glad you were able to change it AND keep the piece.
Hugs,
Patti
oh yeah....it looks great! I have that same brass one hanging in our "don't know what to do with this stuff" closet. It will go back up if we ever move. :)
Cheryl, I am glad your husband finally caved because the new chandy looks wonderful! You may want to hang on to the leisure suite for Halloween. Thanks for joining the Open House party & Take care.
Hugs,
Sherry
Looks great! I wouldn't mind the '70's one if it wasn't shiny. I wonder if it's shellacked, or what... Hmmmm... :)
Wow! Great job, Cheryl. It's beautiful!..>Christine
Love the new chandy, I like you do not care much for brass/gold anything. :o)

Three cheers for husbands! Especially those who take the initiative to do something like that! Looks GREAT!
Wow! That's quite a makeover! It looks great. Good job!
It's so much better! Love it. I have the same brass chandy in my dining room. Hate it! But did you see the makeover on Young House Love yesterday? http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/09/the-updated-light-fixture-blues/
It looks amazing! I'm a new follower. I'd love for you to follow me back!
Cheryl,
Everything looks AMAZING!! I hate to say it but last year I bought the brass one just like yours for my dining room. Got it at a consignment shop for 30.00 but you really had to see the old ugly one that was up there when we moved in. I'm thinking of spray painting mine black tho.
Hi Cheryl, what a great hubby you have to surprise you like that! Love the new one and it looks wonderful with your gorgeous hutch. did you see my post where I painted my 80's eyesore? xo Debra
Everything looks great, Cheryl. The fireplace update, the painted beams and now the new chandy!!! Great ideas, great updates!!!
What a cute story, Cheryl. I'll bet you were delighted. What a good guy! The new chandelier looks beautiful! Thanks for visiting and following Cottage and Creek and for your nice comment. I'm happy to follow you back!

Thanks for introducing yourself to me at my blog~my best friend lives in Eliot Maine and we just went to Brimfield together. I am glad hubs did the new chandy for you, I had my brother spray paint his brass chandy with a black matte finish and it looks amazing just like yours!
OK the change is dramatic! I love it in black! Great job!
Much better! It does take a bit to convince our guys sometimes doesn't it! But, they seem to come around.
I love the change too!
Don't get rid of the old chandy! :) I am posting a redo tomorrow.
