Dustpan Decor

On my weekend flea market stop, I saw an old handmade dustpan for $1.00 and, since it had nice aged wood and an appealing shape, I thought, "Why not? I can find a use for this".  Here's what I came up with...a magnet board for displaying a favorite photo on my kitchen wall. Needless to say, this was a quick and easy transformation. Quicker than sweeping the kitchen floor!

Here's the dustpan as found...

And after a quick rub with Old English Dark furniture oil.

I screwed an eyelet hanger to the top...

Added a favorite photo of my sister...who didn't always dress as a ladybug... and a few alphabet magnets...
And it was ready to hang. Quick, useful and cute! Just be sure that your dustpan is made of a metal that will hold a magnet (not aluminum or copper), and you're set to go.

I think a rusty old dustpan like this one would work really well (if you like rust as much as I do). I see these at flea markets and garage sales quite often...there are probably a few I've forgotten about buried right out in our garage.

You could also use a new steel dustpan to add color...a quick search online brought up these.

This idea is one I saved from Junk Market Style...a quick dustpan project that would make a cute gift. It could also be hung near a kitchen desk to store mail, receipts, or take-out menus in a vintage-inspired kitchen...or next to the phone to hold a pen and notepad.

I don't want to stress you out too much so pretend I'm just whispering the word "Christmas"...but I could see this dustpan hung upside down in a corner of the kitchen to hold holiday cards...or invitations,,,or tags to grab when wrapping gifts.

And the best part? Playing with dustpans is a lot more fun than sweeping the floor with them!

I'm still not quite believing that I just wrote a whole post about dustpans...I guess a blogger's just gotta' do what she's gotta' do!
